Innovation in Curriculum

India, the fastest growing economy, produces about 1.5 million engineers every year. However, hardly 3 percent of them are skilled enough to be employed in the software or product market. The mismatch in the skill sets of the engineering graduates and the demands of the industry is an important factor for the situation.

Innovation in engineering curriculum can enhance the employability of the graduates. A paper by Neelima B. of the Nitte Mahalinga Adyanthaya Memorial Institute of Technology, Karnataka narrates the experience of introducing High Performance Computing – HPC – courses at the undergraduate level. Not many universities offer HPC courses at undergraduate level. HPC is a parallel processing technology for solving complex computational problems.

The paper discusses the experience from the academic year 2010-11 to 2015-16. The introduction of new concept using the HPC technique stirred the interest of students more than the conventional methods. HPC also supported the teaching of many other subjects like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cyber security etc. Students found their project work more valuable and, hence, took it at larger platforms like conferences or as journal articles.

The students were also encouraged to take up internships. The linkages with industry helped formulate and update the course. This linkage bridges the gap between the skills demanded by the industry and the courses taught in engineering colleges. Feedback from alumnus also contributed in updating the courses. The HPC course opened new horizons for students to pursue as career. Awareness about HPC will also add to the pool of experts working in this specialised emerging area.

This study presents an interesting case of innovation in the undergraduate engineering curriculum at the institute. Similar initiatives in other engineering colleges will help improve the employability of engineers
